The following are some tips and guidelines for doing any home remodeling project.

    PLAN PLAN PLAN

Proper planning will not only allow you to explore all your remodeling options, it’ll help you stick to your budget.

It’s really important to know all the product and service options you have available, so you can make sure to find the ones that are within your budgetary constraints.

    BEGIN WITH THE END

    Always know the end goal.

What is it your trying to achieve with your remodel?  What are the functional goals?  What are the ROI goals?  What are your aesthetic goals?  What are your energy goals?

It’s very important to understand the end result so you can properly plan ahead as previously discussed.

    WORK WITH GOOD PEOPLE

You cannot spend enough time finding the right people to work with you on your remodel.

Hire contractors and/or remodelers with a minimum of three years experience.  Also check with the Better Business Bureau and see if there’s any customer complaints.  Read online reviews.  Ask the contractor and remodelers for references from people they’ve worked with and call them.

    VISIT PREVIOUS JOBS

If at all possible, schedule a time to go look at the contractor’s and remodeler’s previous work.

You may see great work which is reassuring or you may see work that’s not quite right or just plain shoddy.  You never know and you’d be surprised by what you may find or hear at a previous job site.

    TREAT EVERYONE WITH RESPECT

It’s very important to treat your contractor and remodelers with respect.  They can make your life miserable if they want to. You can find that multiple delays seem to start happening or budgets mysteriously go way over.

Make sure to work together and stay in close communication with them, which means that you must be on top of the project from start to finish.

    GET A DETAILED AGREEMENT

Make sure you get everything that the remodel encompasses in writing.

Make sure there are no surprises.  Know whose doing what, with what, and by when.  You absolutely need to detail exactly what is going to be done in intensive detail.  This also will help prevent snags, delays, and other inconveniences.

    PREPARE MAKESHIFT AREAS

For instance if you’re remodeling a kitchen, you need a make shift area to cook, or at a minimum have a refrigerator and convention oven of some sort.

You’ll be surprised how inconvenient a kitchen remodel can be if you don’t do this.  Plan ahead!

    STORE VALUABLES

Unfortunately on occasion, things can get stolen.

Having strangers working in your house does have its drawbacks that you must properly plan for.

On top of that, you’ll need to take down pictures, move vases, take down lighting, cover carpeting, and remove any other valuables that can get damaged.  This will help ensure items will not get broken during your remodel.

    COMMUNICATE CONSTANTLY

If you feel something is amiss, communicate it right away.

If you especially like this something, communicate that as well.  🙂

Feedback is crucial to maintaining a good working relationship and making sure the project is done right!

    DESIGN IDEAS

Make sure to discuss all your design ideas upfront with your contractor, remodeler, and with one of our Edge Showroom Kitchen and Bath Designers.  This will help you make the most of your space.

We will provide you a designer at no charge.

    PAMPER YOURSELF AND ENJOY

Consider adding some amenities just for you.

It may be a whirlpool, hot tub, pool, or high end luxury kitchen or bathroom.

The key here is to remember that this is your home and it’s your right and privilege to indulge as much you want and can afford.

    CONNECT SPACES

You may want to consider opening up hallways and walls.

This will help create more open, airy, and livable spaces.

Also makes rooms, and your home as a whole look roomier and bigger which can give it great appeal if, and when you try to sell it.

    MOVE THE LAUNDRY/MUD ROOM

While it’s very common to cram a laundry or mud room on the main floor or garage – don’t!

Put it in a larger, more functional, out of the way area if possible.  even if in a basement.  you’ll be thankful.

Hopefully you learned quite a bit about making your remodel a major success.
